The Kitchen Sink Update

Many have been asking for an update and our journey here in India. As some may know there are some up and comming changes. We can't fully update you on everything right now, till a few things are finalized, but we are safe, so please don't worry! So to be fair I will update you all on the random happenings of life in India.

UK Team: The team of 30 girls from a boarding school in York have come and gone. It was quite a week. I particulary enjoyed them, but maybe thats because I can be dramatic like a highschool girl at times. And some of us (no names mentioned) were happier to see them leave. But I must give them credit as it was a team of all girls (besides one older male leader, thats a whole different story that we wont even touch on!!) and yes they came to buld a school! They worked hard, complained a lot, ate little, and loved on the kids! Overall it was a good to have them here.

Kelsey's arragned marriage: It all started out very innocent. Adrian was fake proposed to and said no, so then they decided they needed to find me a husband. Well little did we know that if you play along with a joke here in India, they will take it further and further and further. Lets just say we are making jokes about my pretend arranged marriage with this particular 26 year old boy, when we later realize he speaks English, and good English at that! Now the Pastors wife is having a ball with this whole joke and decides one day to take us home a different way through town. All of a sudden we are in someones house and I turn to Sheree and ask who these people are. Adrian meinwhile is busting up laughing in the corner, as she had part of this scheme. Yup, we were at his parents house and out her poped! I was traumatized. I had no idea what to say or do, so I just looked down the whole time and made no eye contact! They went out and got us drinks and gave us a tour of the house and backyard. For any of you that do not know Adrian, Sheree or Sunetha please note that they are makingmarriage comments the whole entire time...to him and his family. No eye contact, no eye contact is all I can think. I don't even want to go into full detail of this trip as I was completly traumatized, but kept a smile on my face the entire time! So this afternoon Pastor calls me downstairs. There is a man sitting there. Yup you guessed it, it was his father. All three of us sat there, as Pastor began to explain to me that they were planning the marriage. At this point I began to worry, wait...does the family think this is real? The Pastor, his wife, Sheree and Adrian continue to feed into this joke, as do I a bit becuase well what else can a girl do at this point. We discussed a few things..and dad if you get any sort of message about a dowry, so NO! But serisouly, I think he is going to skype you :/ Oh and side note, I have never actually said a word to this boy becuase well, we avoid eachother like the black plague and its just completly awakward. His father later takes me aside and has a casual broken English conversation with me and proceedes to tell me I can stop by their house any time I would like. He later then invites me over for dinner tomorrow night. Oh goodness! Sunetha is feeding into this and arranges for me to go. At this point I think it is all a joke, but come dinner tomorrow night we will see. As long as I can go back home to the states as a single girl all is well. If I find myself accidently married, well thats wont be so good :/

Rain: As we have stated before rain if a very important thing here. It not only feeds the crops, provides jobs, but have come to find out powers the electricity! There was a statement in the newspaper yesterday (Saturday) that there is only enough water currently for power for the next 5 days. If no rain comes power will be shut off compeltly! Please pray for rain. No electricity is no bueno for many reasons! And we need it for the next step of our journey. So pray please:]

Health: This part may be too much information for some, so feel free to skip. Adrian is finally feeling better after being sick for about a week. She was only out of comission for a day but her head cold lingered much longer. Sheree was on the verge of illness but popped many Vitiman C's, multivitimans and slept. I on the other hand have been feeling very well up until a few days ago. No I won't say I have India belly, but lets just say I may have some of the symptoms. At the begining of the trip I had worms ( gorss I know, but hey we have meds for that!) and although I dont think it a worm, I am always hunger and whatever I eat goes right through me, literally. Sherees stomach also inst doing so well. We aren't sure if this was caused by the breakfast we cooked yesterday morning :/

Travel: We are leaving for a 10 day trip of India on July 16th. We will be flying to New Delhi and then traveling around northern India. We are so excited to see the Taj Mahal, ride and elephant, shop in the markets and have cultural dinners. Please pray that we have safe travels and stay safe through out the trip. We have set us a tour for the 10 days, meaning we will have a driver/ tour gide. They have booked all our train tickets and hotels, so we are all set. We are excited to venture out on our own in the city a bit. We will be safe, don't worry!

Day to day life: Some days are better than others. Some days are completly slow and others are busy. We love going to town and shopping of course. Yesterday morning we made breakfast for Pastor and his wife. We had it all planned out in our head and thought it would be great. Little did we realize that their ingredients are completly different here than anything we would ever use. It took us approximatly 2 and a half hours to make the simplest of breakfast. We mannaged to burn a few things and smoke the girls out of the kitchen. Us three defineatly enjoyed it, and it wasn't bad, but lets just say I dont think they will be asking us to cook again.

Health Camps: We haven't gone out to a health camp recently as people are comming from all over. We are not sure how they hear about us, or the orphange but each day we see about 50-75 patients that just show up at the orphange gate ready to be diagnosed. It kinda crazy to see so many people and hear how far they are comming from, just to be diagnosed by an American. We are still enjoying it, but with each day we are reminded of what a huge task health care in the third world country is. It is nothing like we expected, much harder yet more simple than we even imagined.

Children: We are still loving the children more than we could have even imagined! They have not only come to be apart of our daily lifes, but have each found a way into our hearts. Originally we came here for health care, but God quickly showed us that we are not here for simple health care. We still aren't sure what exactly our purpose for being here is, but we may never know. We are staying optimistic as God continues to remind us each that we are exactly where He wants us.

Hot days: So I must say, although the worst part of the day is after lunch and before the kids get home, it is one of my favirote. The sun is blazing, everyone is sleeping and the 3 American girls are delerious. We have seemed to unknowingly made a tradition of going into our swealtering room, with no power and laying on the what seems to be cool tile floor, with little clothes on and have those life talks. We really get no where in our conversations as we are all tired, hot and more delerious than you could imagine. We have come to adore and name our mini handheld fans which are our saving grace in these hours. Although this time is miserable, more miserable than words could express, I love it. Its our bonding time and I will never forget the jokes and the laughs had.

Care Packages: We thank you all for the carepackages! We have recieved two so far, and they have made our day more than we could have even imagined. It usually goes a a little something like this: package recieved, lots of sreams and jumping up and down, rip package open, oh and awe at the contents, jump and and down some more while Kelsey and Adrian sing and dance, and then we proceede to stuff our faces with the delicious snacks inside :]

Hope you all got a little taste of life here in India, and although this isn't a full update, we will update you more when we can (provided the power is on, and internet is working! Honestly its like the stars have to align completly perfect to actually get working internet here)

Please continue to pray for us!

PS- Adrian and Sheree just played vollyball in Sarees and won!
